Working Mechanism

  • GFCI circuit breakers compare the current flowing through the hot wire to the current flowing through the neutral wire.
  • Under normal conditions, the amount of current flowing through both wires should be equal, meaning that the current is flowing along the intended path.
  • However, if there is a ground fault, some of the current will be diverted to a ground path, such as through a person's body.
  • This will cause an imbalance in the current between the hot and neutral wires, which the GFCI circuit breaker will detect.
  • When this happens, the circuit breaker will quickly trip and interrupt the flow of electricity to the circuit, which helps to prevent electric shock.

Features

  • Eaton GFXBC Series GFCI circuit breakers have an interrupt rating of 3kAIC.
  • These single-pole circuit breakers have a trip sensitivity of 10mA.

Standards and Approvals

  • UL
  • CSA

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should GFCI circuit breakers be tested?

GFCI circuit breakers should be tested regularly, at least once a month, to ensure they are functioning correctly.

How do I reset a tripped GFCI circuit breaker?

  • Make sure all devices and appliances connected to the circuit are unplugged.
  • Locate the circuit breaker panel and find the tripped GFCI circuit breaker.
  • Press the breaker switch to the 'off' position and then back to the 'on' position.

How do I know if a GFCI circuit breaker is working properly?

  • To test a GFCI circuit breaker, locate the test button on the breaker and press it.
  • This should cause the breaker to trip and interrupt the flow of electricity.
  • Press the reset button to restore power to the circuit.
  • If the breaker does not trip when the test button is pressed, it may indicate that the GFCI device is not functioning properly and should be replaced.
