Working Mechanism

  • Eaton HFWF Series molded case circuit breakers feature a non-interchangeable, thermal-magnetic trip unit.
  • The thermal trip comprises a bi-metallic strip that gets heated and bends when an overcurrent passes through the conductors, causing the contacts to open and interrupt the current flow.
  • The magnetic trip, on the other hand, has an electromagnetic component that detects the presence of a short circuit.
  • As the current rises abruptly, a magnetic field is created that causes the displacement in the tripping coil, causing the contacts to open again and stop the current flow.

Features

  • They feature a compact design that saves space and makes installation easier.
  • These MCCBs are integrated with fixed thermal & fixed magnetic trip units that avoid nuisance tripping on mild overloads but respond instantly when exposed to faulty currents.
  • They have a manual trip feature that is controlled by the breaker's toggle handle and a PUSH-TO-TRIP button to trip during a power failure or troubleshooting.
  • These circuit breakers are available in one / two / three / four pole configurations with a high interrupting capacity for complete safety.
  • Selected MCCBs are equipped with terminals on the load end for quick installation on panelboards and are designed to withstand temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius.

Standards and Approvals

  • IEC
  • UL

Frequently Asked Questions

What are molded cases?

A molded case houses the internal components of the circuit breaker, including the trip unit, contacts and operating mechanism. It is made of a high-strength, non-conductive material that provides insulation and protection to the components of a circuit breaker.

How do I reset the circuit breaker once it is tripped?

The circuit breaker can be easily reset by moving the toggle handle to the extreme OFF position and then to the ON position to restore the current. However, during a thermal trip, the circuit breaker cannot be reset until the thermal element (bi-metallic strip) cools down.

What is the function of a PUSH-TO-TRIP button?

The PUSH-TO-TRIP button is used for periodically exercising the operating mechanism and checking the proper functioning of the trip unit.
