Building a Coupling
A Lovejoy coupling is user-assembled by combining two coupling hubs and one spider. Users should use safety equipment, tightening tools and dial indicators for ensuring correct installation, efficient operation & user safety. Hubs & spiders of the same series should be used together and should have the necessary parameters according to Lovejoy's installation / operating manual.
For example, if users want to build & install a CJ Series coupling, they can follow the steps given below:
- Buy a Lovejoy CJ Series spider and two hubs from the same series.
- Ensure that each component is free from contaminants / defects / cracks and match the shaft diameter to the bore size of the hubs.
- A key should be fitted onto the shaft key slot and the hubs should be slid & fit into them for preventing slipping during shaft rotation. Fix the hubs on the shafts using set screws.
- Insert the spider into a hub while ensuring that the spider opening is large enough to fit both the shaft & the key.
- Attach the second hub to the other end of the spider, keeping in mind the guidelines mentioned in the installation manual.
- Check the set screw tightness & alignment before testing, to prevent possible misalignment.
- The coupling is finally ready for operation.
