About LOVEJOY

Lovejoy's extensive catalogue comprises rubber suspensions, coupling hubs, V-belt pulleys, sprockets, coupling spiders, universal joints, shaft locking devices and variable speed drives. Lovejoy couplings are designed to transmit torque and rotation between two shafts for accommodating shaft misalignment. These couplings dampen shock and vibrations to prevent damage to components. Lovejoy couplings feature two hubs and an insert (known as a spider) that fits between the hubs. Spiders offer high load capacity while maintaining a damping effect on vibration and thermal conductivity. We offer an entire catalogue of Lovejoy couplings, including QUICK FLEX, curved jaw, jaw in shear, S-Flex Endurance, HercuFlex gear, torsional and disc style couplings. The brand's hydraulic reservoirs are designed for storing excess hydraulic fluid during agricultural & chemical processing applications. They feature cast aluminium construction with steel mesh & cover for durability & protection against contaminants. They have Buna-N gaskets for a leak-tight seal and aluminium finish for complete protection against abrasive fluids, chemicals & harsh industrial environments.
Lovejoy coupling spiders are useful where shafts and driven equipment need to be kept partitioned by a standard gap. These fail-safe Lovejoy spiders are used with L-type keyway hubs to prevent relative movement or extremely close (near touching) shaft separation, making them resistant to dirt, sand, oil, moisture & grease. These closed-centre units have a robust design and are desirable for high-speed applications. Lovejoy coupling hubs are available in various shaft connection options, such as keyway / set screw style, clamp style and an integrated shrink disc style on Raptor Supplies.

LOVEJOY Competitive Advantages

Building a Coupling

A Lovejoy coupling is user-assembled by combining two coupling hubs and one spider. Users should use safety equipment, tightening tools and dial indicators for ensuring correct installation, efficient operation & user safety. Hubs & spiders of the same series should be used together and should have the necessary parameters according to Lovejoy's installation / operating manual.

For example, if users want to build & install a CJ Series coupling, they can follow the steps given below:

  • Buy a Lovejoy CJ Series spider and two hubs from the same series.
  • Ensure that each component is free from contaminants / defects / cracks and match the shaft diameter to the bore size of the hubs.
  • A key should be fitted onto the shaft key slot and the hubs should be slid & fit into them for preventing slipping during shaft rotation. Fix the hubs on the shafts using set screws.
  • Insert the spider into a hub while ensuring that the spider opening is large enough to fit both the shaft & the key.
  • Attach the second hub to the other end of the spider, keeping in mind the guidelines mentioned in the installation manual.
  • Check the set screw tightness & alignment before testing, to prevent possible misalignment.
  • The coupling is finally ready for operation.

Colour coding in Lovejoy Spiders

Lovejoy spiders are colour coded on the basis of shore hardness, torque capacity and material. Each shore hardness level of a Lovejoy coupling spider corresponds to separate torque capacity, damping and chemical resistance, ideal for different applications.

Following is the colour coded table of CJ Series spiders based on their shore hardness specification:

Frequently Asked Questions

Which company owns Lovejoy couplings?

The Timken Company (a world leader in tapered roller bearings) owns Lovejoy Inc., which is a leading manufacturer of industrial couplings and universal joints.

Where is Lovejoy Inc. located?

Lovejoy Inc. is headquartered at Downers Grove, Illinois, USA.Their manufacturing operations in the USA are undertaken at plants in Downers Grove, Illinois and South Haven, Michigan.

What does the term 'key' refer to in Lovejoy couplings?

Selected models of Lovejoy couplings have a keyway - a slot cut out from the mating part of the couplings. These slots fit in the keys attached to shafts or other mated tools. The use of keys leads to improved torque & slippage prevention. It also results in reduced losses due to vibration & backlash (degree of free movement between two rotating, mating parts).

What special characteristics are associated with Lovejoy coupling spiders?

  • 92 Shore A insert spiders provide excellent torque carrying capacity whereas 80 Shore A spiders have the best damping properties.
  • 64 Shore D spiders are suitable for use in hot & humid environments, and have the highest torque capacity of all elastomeric spiders.
  • 95 / 98 Shore A spiders offer greater torque capacity than standard 92 Shore A spiders, and higher damping capacity as compared to 64 Shore D spiders.
  • Spiders having Hytrel construction are resistant to high operating temperatures, ozone, sunlight, chemicals & hydrolysis.
  • Lovejoy rubber coupling spiders having NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) or Buna N construction provide the best damping properties of all elastomeric spiders. They can withstand oil, hydraulic fluid & most chemicals, while resembling natural rubber in resilience and elasticity.
  • Urethane spiders offer greater torque capacity than NBR spiders, but lesser than Hytrel spiders.
  • Bronze spiders are used in slow speed operations requiring high torque capacity or resistance to high temperature & chemicals.

Why should users switch from a grid coupling to a disc coupling?

Grid style couplings are used for a wide variety of mining & industrial applications, but they can cause lots of hassle & downtime. These grid couplings require frequent lubrication and maintenance to prevent wear & tear. They are hard to remove from shafts, for maintenance or replacement. They also cause lubricant leakage, which can cause accidents or injuries. Disc couplings, on the other hand, do not need lubrication and can handle the desired torque & misalignment requirements, all while being resistant to harsh environments. These disc couplings also can be maintained, inspected & replaced easily, as they have no wearable parts.

What standards / certifications do Lovejoy couplings abide by?

Lovejoy couplings are certified to AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association), API (American Petroleum Institute) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards. Lovejoy Inc. is also ISO 9001:2015 certified for maintaining superior quality while manufacturing couplings.

What are the benefits of using Lovejoy couplings?

Lovejoy couplings provide vibration damping, shock absorption, misalignment tolerance and ease of installation.

What are the key factors to consider before purchasing a Lovejoy coupling?

Choosing the right coupling depends on factors like the type of machinery, torque requirements, shaft sizes, misalignment and environmental conditions.
